“The purpose of art is not the release of a momentary ejection of adrenaline but is, rather, the gradual, lifelong construction of a state of wonder and serenity.”
Glenn Gould
Welcome! So, whether you’ve always wanted to play the piano and now are about to finally begin or are simply picking up an age-old dream, in this chapter a new journey begins – one into the artistry and happiness the piano will bring. I remember my first encounter with the piano; its brilliant keys beckoned me to a world of possibility. Beneath the surface, however, I had unlocked what the piano actually means to me and why it has inspired me to do so much as an artist. I had discovered, in that moment, that the piano is so much more than an instrument – the instrument is an access point for me, that allows me to dig deep down, toward the most emotional parts of life.
The Magic of the Piano
The piano possesses a singular ability to speak without saying a word. It ranges from the faintest whisper of a lullaby to the bold pronouncements of a classical sonata, conveys stories that reverberate within us. For beginners, every note you play is a step forward unlocking this unique language. You may be wondering – why the piano? Here are a few thoughts:
- Personal Journey: The benefit of learning the piano is the journey itself, just as much as the music. Through each one, you learn not just technical skills but also patience, discipline, and a feeling of accomplishment.
- Emotional Connection: Play the piano to bring out your emotions. Eventually, you are going to find that playing it can be an excellent way to relieve some stress, and get in touch with your inside.
- Creative Exploration: Each new melody you learn, song you write and share, adds another dimension to your understanding of music. You need to celebrate the small wins, they are building blocks for your success.
My Story and Encouragement
There was so much to take in when I first started learning, from how to read a piece of sheet music to how to position the fingers up and down the frets. But then I realized how every expert was a total newbie at some point. At times, I could not even do a simple exercise, only to find myself amazed years later at the progress I made with practice every single day. It was through this journey that I learned persistence and passion is what challenges us and turns it into stepping stones.
As you begin to take this path, remember these concepts:
- Embrace the Process: Each second spent at the piano, regardless of perfection vs imperfection, is a part of your overall development.
- Stay Curious: Follow your curiosity. Try out various styles and pieces that interest you.
- Reflect and Celebrate: Keep a daily reflection journal. Note your thoughts after practice sessions – what worked, what challenged you, what you’re excited to learn next.
Reflect and Make It Personal: What Do You Want?
The best part of taking time to reflect is that it is a personal journey. Before you proceed further, allocate a short time to evaluate your own goals:
- What does it mean to you to learn the piano?
Whatever the reason – self-expression, stress relief, or the sheer joy of music – write it down.
- What is your vision for your journey?
Consider what you’re hoping to accomplish in the weeks ahead. For your first practice, set a small, achievable goal.
- What are your expectations?
Acknowledge any fears or worries you have and write them out. Keep in mind, even the most forward experts were once where you are now.
Tip: Record these reflections in a practice journal. You will be surprised by the progress you make and insights you will have about yourself over time.
Make Sure to Practice Every Day
When you start diving into the piano, you need to create a simple drill – on a daily basis (at least 15 minutes), think about what went right and wrong. Ask yourself:
- What did I like about today’s session?
- What part of the piano’s language thrilled me the most?
- What can I do tomorrow based on today’s learning experience?
This isn’t just an exercise in time tracking, it’s about developing a stronger relationship with your musical self.
